Pai Gow strategy comes down to setting two hands without weakening the required five-card hand

Pai Gow Poker asks players to split seven cards into a five-card back hand and a two-card front hand. The back hand must always outrank the front hand. That rule creates the central strategy problem: the strongest possible five-card hand is not always the best overall setup.

A player needs both hands to beat the dealer’s corresponding hands to win. Winning one and losing one usually creates a push, so balanced hand-setting matters more than chasing one oversized hand.

The first rule is to protect the back hand’s legal strength. If the front hand outranks the back hand, the hand is fouled and loses automatically. After that, the decision becomes about distribution.

With one pair, the pair normally stays in the back hand while the two highest remaining cards form the front. With two pair, the split depends on pair strength and kicker quality. Low two pair is often kept together. Medium or high two pair may be split when the front hand would otherwise be too weak.

Three pair is usually played by putting the highest pair in front and the two lower pairs in back. Three of a kind is normally kept in the back unless there are three aces, where splitting one ace to the front can make both hands stronger. Full houses are usually split by putting the pair in front and trips in back, because keeping the full house intact often leaves a weak front hand.

Straights and flushes require comparison. If using the straight or flush leaves only weak front cards, it may be better to break it and create a pair up front. The goal is not simply to build the prettiest back hand. The best Pai Gow setup gives both hands a realistic chance to compete against the dealer.
